What We Say to Our Children Is Important

Our words are so important. Our words show the condition of our hearts. If we want our children to grow up to be men and women of God, we need to be an example to them. We need to be careful what we say. Ephesians 5:4 says, “Let there be no filthiness (obscenity, indecency) nor foolish and sinful (silly and corrupt) talk, nor coarse jesting which are not fitting or becoming; but instead voice your thankfulness (to God).” Sometimes we attempt to excuse our words with, “I was only joking” or “You shouldn’t take things so seriously”, but Ephesians 5:6 goes on, “Let no one delude and deceive you with empty excuses and groundless arguments (for these sins), for through these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of rebellion and disobedience.” We should be living every day recognizing that Jesus is with us hearing everything we say. If we could physically see His face in front of us, I wonder if the same words would come out of our mouths. Our children are listening to everything we say, and they will follow our example. Ephesians 5:15 concludes, “Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people).”
