Who Wrote the Bible?

Who wrote the Bible? It is so important that we understand that the Bible is the Word of God. The Bible contains everything we need to know as we live day to day, but if we are not confident that the Bible contains God’s Words, we will not be confident to live by it. In my experience, religious studies classes at university taught that it was simply men who wrote the Bible of their own accord. This is the type of teaching that our children are being exposed to in schools and in universities. We will have no confidence in God’s Word if we believe that. I would like to know what proof that professor had when he said that men wrote the Bible on their own.

I would rather listen to someone who could give an eyewitness account concerning this subject. Peter was one of Jesus’ disciples. Peter was just working away one day, catching fish from his boat. Jesus walked along the shore of the Sea of Galilee and saw Peter and his brother, Andrew, throwing their nets into the sea. Jesus called to them in Mark 1:17 and said, “Come after Me and be My disciples, and I will make you to become fishers of men.” Peter and Andrew did just that, and for the next three years, they followed Jesus everywhere, listening and continually learning from Him. After Jesus was crucified and returned to His Father, Peter addressed this issue of who wrote the Bible. Now these are not the words of a college professor or teacher living today. These are the words of a man who lived for three years every day in the presence  of Jesus. These are the words of a man who spoke daily face to face with Jesus. These are the words of a man who was taught all day, every day, for three years the ways of God. These are the words of a man who could provide an eyewitness account of Jesus’ Words.

In II Peter 1:16-18, Peter is explaining some of the miraculous things he had seen WITH HIS OWN EYES!!! “For we were not following cleverly devised stories when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah), but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty (grandeur, authority of sovereign power). For when He was invested with honour and glory from God the Father and a voice was borne to Him by the (splendid) Majestic Glory (in the bright cloud that overshadowed Him, saying), This is my beloved Son in Whom I am well pleased and delight. We (actually) heard this voice borne out of heaven, for we were together with Him on the holy mountain.” Peter was there! Peter saw this happening with his own eyes and heard with his own ears!

Then Peter begins to talk about the Word of God. In II Peter 1:19 he tells us “And we have the prophetic word (made) firmer still. You will do well to pay close attention to it as to a lamp shining in a dismal (squalid and dark) place, until the day breaks through (the gloom) and the Morning Star rises (comes into being) in your hearts.” Peter tells us we should be paying close attention to God’s Word. He should know. He spoke directly with Jesus all those years.

In II Peter 1:20-21, we finally read what the man with the eyewitness account says about who wrote the Bible. “(Yet) first (you must) understand this, that no prophecy of Scripture is (a matter) of any personal or private or special interpretation (loosening, solving). For no prophecy ever originated because some man willed it (to do so- it never came by human impulse), but men spoke from God who were borne along (moved and impelled) by the Holy Spirit.”

So Peter is saying that no scripture came just from what men wanted to write or thought up on their own to write. The Bible is taken 100% from Almighty God. Because of this, we can believe God when He tells us in His Word how much He loves us. We can believe when He tells us He is for us and is on our side. We can believe when He tells us He has already healed us. The Words in the Bible are God speaking directly to you. I encourage you to read His Words. Find out what He is saying about your situation. He loves you. He is not trying to keep things from you; He is trying to bring good to you.

I will never believe men who say the Bible was just written by men of their own accord. I will believe the eyewitness account. I will believe the truth.
